Scientists have identified 31 new species from a recent expedition off the coast of Brazil. The discoveries were made in the ocean’s midwater zone, a vast and largely unexplored habitable ecosystem situated between the surface and the seafloor.
The expedition documented a variety of new life forms, including a giant octopus consuming a jellyfish and an ultra-fast gossamer worm. Advanced technologies such as 3D lasers and sophisticated microscopes enabled the research team to confirm these new species rapidly, a process that can typically take decades.
