Bangladesh fishing cat rescue and release offers conservation model

A severely injured fishing cat in northern Bangladesh underwent extensive rehabilitation and was recently released into a tea estate. The cat, fitted with a satellite-tracking collar, was returned to an area bordering a freshwater wetland.

The fishing cat, a species listed by the IUCN as potentially numbering around 7,500 in the wild, is found in several Asian countries, with a significant portion of its range outside protected areas. The male cat was rescued in February 2026 by the Bangladesh Forest Department and transferred to the Jankichara Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre, run by the Creative Conservation Alliance (CCA).

According to the CCA CEO, the cat suffered from a dislocated jaw and severe malnutrition. After months of veterinary treatment and assisted feeding, its health improved significantly, and it gained substantial weight before its soft release.
