During a 2022 heat wave in the Red Sea, a patch of corals off the coast of Saudi Arabia, treated with probiotics, did not bleach. These probiotics are beneficial bacteria isolated from healthy corals.
Researchers report that these treatments prevented coral bleaching. Corals are vital habitats for many marine species and are declining due to rising temperatures. Probiotics may offer a way to help protect corals from threats like marine heat waves in natural environments.
