New Zealand deploys tools to combat invasive caulerpa seaweed

Since its discovery in 2021, an invasive seaweed known as caulerpa has formed widespread meadows on the seabed in Aotearoa New Zealand. This resilient species is being described as ‘wily’ by researchers and those working to remove it.

Efforts are underway to develop an arsenal of tools to combat the invasive seaweed. Commercial divers are actively removing caulerpa, particularly in areas like the Bay of Islands, highlighting the challenges posed by its tenacious nature.
