Dolphins separate social areas from hunting grounds, study reveals

Dolphins maintain separate habitats for social interactions and hunting, according to a study published in the journal PeerJ. Researchers listened to dolphin vocalizations along the Atlantic coast of Florida, gathering audio data with a solar-powered autonomous marine vehicle.

The acoustic wave glider was deployed for two months off the East Florida Shelf. In addition to recording 62 hours of underwater audio, it collected environmental data including water temperature, salinity, and chlorophyll-a concentration. Scientists detected dolphins in over 1,600 recordings and classified their calls into whistles for communication and clicking sounds used for hunting.
