A soundscape ecologist has transferred a personal archive of over 5,000 hours of marine and terrestrial sound recordings to France. The collection, gathered over more than fifty years, documents the sonic expressions of the natural world, including wind, water, and creature sounds.
The decision to move the archive was prompted by concerns about the security and accessibility of scientific data, particularly in the context of governance shifts that the author perceived as placing science “under siege.” The archivist viewed the preservation of these biophonies as an urgent responsibility, extending beyond mere devotion to an act of defiance and duty to protect knowledge from potential erasure.
