Climate tipping point research unevenly distributed, study finds

Research on 14 climate tipping elements between 2000 and 2025 shows an uneven distribution of scientific attention. The Greenland Ice Sheet dominated publications, appearing in 20% of the analyzed studies, while abrupt permafrost thaw in boreal forests appeared in less than 1%.

The study found no systematic tendency for tipping elements with lower estimated warming thresholds to attract more scientific attention. Furthermore, only 8.1% of the publications explicitly examined tipping dynamics like abrupt change, self-perpetuation, persistence, or irreversibility. Gaps were particularly striking for permafrost thaw and coral reefs, with few studies focusing on these characteristics.
