Canada’s Largest West Coast Kelp Restoration Project Launched

A significant kelp restoration effort is underway in Clayoquot Sound, British Columbia, Canada. The project, described as the largest on the West Coast of North America, has established a kelp nursery that has planted more than 4,200 square meters of new habitat since its launch in early 2026.

The nursery grows bull kelp and giant kelp on submerged lines to protect them from seafloor predators. The mature kelp will be transplanted to restore degraded areas and establish new kelp forests throughout Clayoquot Sound. The initiative is a collaboration between the Redd Fish Restoration Society, the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation, and West Coast Kelp. Funding has been provided by the provincial government, the World Wildlife Fund of Canada, and the Clayoquot Biosphere Trust.
