Bangladesh Solar Power Cushions Energy Crisis Amidst Fuel Shortages

Bangladesh is currently experiencing a significant energy crunch, characterized by widespread fuel shortages, frequent power plant outages, and escalating costs for imported energy resources. In this challenging landscape, the nation’s burgeoning solar energy sector is playing a crucial role in providing a buffer against more extensive blackouts.

The solar sector, though still small in scale, has demonstrated its potential to alleviate the strain on the national power grid. Data from the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) indicates that solar facilities represent 16 out of the 136 operational power plants and electricity import sources. This contribution highlights the growing importance of renewable energy in the country’s energy mix, particularly during periods of critical supply disruption.
