A WRI India study has identified Gujarat as India’s most resource-ready state for developing green hydrogen hubs. The study emphasizes that proximity to renewable energy sources and hydrogen consumers are the two most crucial factors in determining hub locations.
Water availability is ranked as the third most important factor, posing a constraint for states like Rajasthan despite their significant renewable energy potential. The study suggests that India requires region-specific strategies, interstate connections, and improved data on land, water, infrastructure, and industrial demand for effective planning of future hydrogen hubs.
Gujarat leads in both resource readiness and consumer proximity, supported by its renewable energy infrastructure and existing demand. Rajasthan follows due to strong renewable energy resources, but faces challenges with water availability. Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh also show varying degrees of suitability based on different criteria.
