In Ayetoro, Nigeria, coastal erosion is causing land loss, submerging landmarks and a wetland crucial for migratory waterbirds. Species like Eurasian curlews, whimbrels, and common sandpipers utilize this area during their annual migration between October and January.
Local community volunteers, participating in a Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) wetlands monitoring project, help count birds and collect data. This work is part of the Climate-Resilient East Atlantic Flyway (CREAF) project, funded by Germany’s International Climate Initiative, which aims to improve habitat management for migratory waterbirds along Africa’s Atlantic coast. Coastal erosion at Ayetoro averaged over 10 meters per year between 2010 and 2020.
