Africa’s 30 by 30 Conservation Target Faces Challenges Despite Progress

African countries have secured 19.9% of terrestrial and 17.2% of marine areas for conservation, exceeding the global average coverage. However, achieving the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework’s “30 by 30” target by 2030 appears unlikely.

Conservation experts highlight that the objective is not just meeting the percentage goal, but ensuring effective and equitable management that strengthens ecological resilience and is locally grounded. Competing demands from agriculture, infrastructure, and economic development, alongside conflicting government priorities, pose significant obstacles to conservation efforts across the continent.
