UN report: Global ecosystem restoration only 25% implemented

A United Nations report reveals that only 252 million hectares, representing 25% of the 1 billion hectares committed globally for ecosystem restoration, have been documented as under restoration. To meet the 2030 targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, countries must triple their current restoration efforts.

Terrestrial ecosystems constitute 92% of the documented restoration area, with Asia leading at 185 million hectares, including 127.4 million hectares in China. Freshwater ecosystems account for 4% and marine/coastal ecosystems for about 2%. The report cautions that documented restoration does not guarantee ecosystem recovery, and degradation continues worldwide.
