A 3-meter (10-foot) female dusky shark, categorized as endangered on the IUCN Red List, has been swimming in a shallow city canal in Busan, South Korea, for several weeks, attracting thousands of spectators. Two attempts to move the shark to the open sea have been unsuccessful.
The shark, named Bukangi, has been identified by South Korea’s National Institute of Fisheries Sciences. The Busan city government is deploying over 100 workers daily to monitor her condition. The public has reportedly developed a strong affection for Bukangi, leading to merchandise and distillery releases in her likeness.
