Low-income settlements in Colombo, Sri Lanka, are experiencing challenges with their urban water supply. Residents rely on pipe-borne water from the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB), which is subject to routine water cuts and maintenance disruptions.
Following water cuts, the supply can turn muddy, posing a risk to health as not all households possess water filters. Nalin Kaluwitharana, a resident, noted the need to use water sparingly during drought conditions but emphasized reliance on tap water for daily needs and maintaining gardens. Linda Arulanantham, also from the settlement, confirmed using a filter for drinking water but acknowledged that not all homes are equipped with such systems.
