Two municipalities situated in the Peruvian Amazon have enacted ordinances recognizing the legal right to exist and thrive for native stingless bees. These bees will also be represented in legal proceedings.
This significant development, detailed in a correspondence published in Nature, marks the first time in history that any insect species has been acknowledged as a rights-bearing entity. The municipalities of Satipo are among those that have passed these pioneering ordinances.
