Amazon’s Giant Otters and Indigenous Baniwa People Share Içana River

Along the Içana River in Brazil’s upper Rio Negro Basin, researchers observed Baniwa men checking fishing traps while giant otters (Pteronura brasiliensis) simultaneously hunted in the water. The Baniwa people, who live along the Içana’s banks, rely on fishing for protein in the river system, which is home to diverse fish species.

Giant otters, typically living in family groups of nine to 12, also inhabit the Içana River. Their feeding sites along the bank are marked by fish bones and feces, indicating their presence and hunting activities in the area.
