Conservation experts warn that the decline of many migratory bird populations is a sign of increasing pressure on global ecosystems. They are calling for governments to coordinate conservation efforts across national borders.
A recent report presented at the Global Flyways Summit in Nairobi found that 45% of migratory bird species are declining, and approximately one in nine is threatened with extinction. Shorebirds and seabirds are among the groups experiencing particularly severe declines.
The main threats identified include habitat loss, agriculture, hunting, pollution, and climate change. BirdLife International’s chief scientist noted that these pressures cannot be effectively addressed within individual countries.
