A 1-gigawatt AI data center, set to be larger than the combined total of all data centers currently installed in Brazil, is planned for the municipality of Paracatu. Local authorities, business owners, farmers, and citizens were reportedly unaware of the project, with construction slated to begin in two months.
The data center is being planned by Atlas Renewable Energy, owned by an arm of global asset manager BlackRock. Paracatu is located a three-hour drive from Brazil’s capital, BrasÃlia, and the municipality is described as water-stressed.
