India’s protein market grows, but affordability widens nutritional gap

India’s protein market, valued at approximately Rs 15,300 crore in 2026, is projected to reach Rs 21,000 crore by 2031, fueled by demand for protein-rich foods, supplements, and snacks. Social media trends and fitness culture are driving this growth, making protein an aspirational product.

However, rising food prices, particularly for accessible protein sources like eggs, are impacting dietary diversity for low-income households. This highlights a disparity between urban wellness trends and the nutritional needs of a significant portion of the population. Ensuring adequate nutrition for all remains a challenge as protein becomes increasingly linked to lifestyle and affordability.

Promoting affordable, locally available protein sources, alongside crop diversification and improved food labelling, is crucial to prevent adequate nutrition from becoming a privilege of the affluent.
