Isolated Andaman Tribe’s Coastal Ecosystem Supports Survival, Expert Says

The North Sentinel Island tribal reserve in India’s Andaman and Nicobar archipelago features a healthy coastal ecosystem supporting the survival of its isolated inhabitants. The Sentinelese people spear fish, hunt turtles, and collect mollusks from intact coral reefs and mangrove habitats.

Biologists note these coastal reefs are rich in fish life, and the mangroves serve as crucial nurseries for marine biodiversity. Tribal expert Manish Chandi has observed groups foraging for these nutritious resources on several occasions. The island’s coastline is also protected by giant trees that help prevent soil erosion.
