India is experiencing a significant increase in electricity demand, with consumption approaching a record 256 gigawatts weeks ahead of the usual summer peak. This surge is attributed to an intense heatwave affecting large areas of the country. Temperatures in central and southern regions are reportedly climbing into the mid-40s Celsius. The rising temperatures are increasing the demand for cooling, which is consequently placing strain on the nation’s power systems earlier than anticipated.
