Several years of severe drought are compelling communities in Angola’s Cunene Province to leave their homes and seek water and food in neighboring Namibia. “There is real hunger and thirst here; that’s why the village has become depopulated,” one resident stated.
Nearly all able-bodied individuals have departed, leaving behind the elderly. Southern Angola has endured repeated severe droughts, extreme heat, and environmental degradation, impacting families’ access to water, crops, and livestock. Approximately 30% of the area has suffered desertification, diminishing livelihoods for many subsistence communities. Namibia, despite also experiencing drought, has implemented measures to ensure water access and prevent food insecurity.
