Reservoirs and inland waterbodies are emerging as prime locations for utility-scale solar projects in India, with potential estimated at 102.18 GWp. This assessment considered water availability, depth, solar irradiance, and proximity to infrastructure.
Several floating solar projects are underway or planned, including a 100 MW project in Telangana and a proposed 600 MW project in Madhya Pradesh. India currently has approximately 700 MW of installed floating solar capacity. The country aims to increase the share of non-fossil sources in its installed electricity capacity to 60% by 2035.
The Union Cabinet has approved the Pradhan Mantri Surya Sarovar Yojana (PM-SSY), allocating Rs 5,070 crore to develop 5,000 MW of floating solar projects with co-located energy storage. Financial support will be disbursed for feasibility studies and project commissioning.
