A battery system designed to store excess energy is now powering an apartment building in Buffalo, New York, during periods of grid strain and high electricity costs. The project, a collaboration between battery manufacturer Viridi and developer Good Carbon Co., aims to demonstrate the safe operation of larger battery systems in residential and commercial settings.
The lithium-ion battery system at Peace Bridge Place has a capacity of 3.75 megawatt-hours and is connected to the local electric grid. Viridi states the system is capable of powering the building for multiple days. This installation is noted as one of the largest such systems currently operating in a U.S. residential building.
