A comprehensive global study, presented at the Bonn Climate Conference, has revealed an alarming and unprecedented deterioration in the planet’s key climate indicators. The findings indicate that all eleven vital signs monitored have worsened significantly since the last assessment conducted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
The report highlights a dramatic increase in marine heatwaves, which have surged by over 60%. This intensification of ocean warming poses a severe threat to marine ecosystems and the species that depend on them.
Furthermore, Earth’s energy imbalance has reached a record high, signifying that the planet is absorbing significantly more energy than it is radiating back into space. This imbalance is a direct driver of rising global temperatures and other climate-related changes.
Human-caused warming also reached a critical point, with temperatures hitting 1.37°C in 2025. This alarming figure brings the world perilously close to the 1.5°C limit, a threshold widely recognized as crucial for avoiding the most catastrophic impacts of climate change. The proximity to this limit suggests that the window for effective intervention is rapidly closing.
