A significant accumulation of floating weeds is severely impacting farming and fishing activities at Chia Lagoon, Malawi’s largest lagoon. The weeds are choking waterways, making it difficult for farmers to access their fields, leading to crop rot for crops like maize, rice, and cassava. Fishers are also struggling to navigate their boats due to blocked routes.
The lagoon, which covers 1,700 hectares and supports over 7,800 households through agriculture and fishing, experienced an unprecedented influx of weeds and debris starting in February. This accumulation began where the lagoon drains into Lake Malawi, causing water to back up and flood agricultural lands. Scientists are investigating the cause of this extensive weed growth.
