Cabo Verde Island Sees Dramatic Rise in Loggerhead Turtle Nesting

Loggerhead turtles are now nesting on Boa Vista, the third-largest island in the Cabo Verde archipelago, in dramatically increased numbers. This surge was first noticed by night patrol teams in 2018. The teams, composed of staff and volunteers from the local conservation NGO Cabo Verde Natura 2000 (CVN2), observed a significant change along the island’s beaches.

In the years preceding 2018, these patrol teams encountered a much lower number of nesting loggerheads. The change observed marked a substantial departure from the typical nesting patterns documented previously. This substantial increase suggests a positive trend for the species on Boa Vista.
