Bhutan aims for food self-sufficiency by 2029, guided by happiness philosophy

Bhutan, a Himalayan kingdom between China and India, is aiming for complete food self-sufficiency by 2029. This national goal is guided by the country’s unique “Gross National Happiness” philosophy, established in 1972.

This philosophy underscores that the food system is integral to sustaining landscapes, communities, and culture. Farmers in Bhutan face challenges including climate change, steep mountain terrain, limited arable land, and labor scarcity as young people move away from agriculture. They also contend with wildlife conflict and market access issues for their produce.
