Africa’s electricity demand is projected to rise dramatically as nations strive to achieve universal electricity access by the year 2030. However, a detailed database tracking 3,139 power plants indicates that fossil fuels will remain the primary source of electricity supply, accounting for 61% of the total.
Despite this continued reliance on fossil fuels, the study shows a significant increase in renewable energy sources. Renewables are expected to grow from 19% to 34% of the electricity mix. This shift, while positive, is overshadowed by the concurrent development of coal and gas projects.
The expansion of these fossil fuel projects is anticipated to drive a substantial 19% increase in carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions. Furthermore, these projects will place additional strain on the continent’s already scarce water resources, exacerbating existing water stress challenges.
