In South Africa’s Eastern Cape province, spekboom shrubs (Portulacaria afra) are central to ecosystem restoration efforts. These projects are positioned within a new carbon market landscape, aiming to regenerate degraded land.
However, practical challenges exist. One farm camp described as “well on the knackered side of the degradation scale” is undergoing restoration. Specific difficulties include ensuring newly planted spekboom shrubs are planted deeply enough to prevent damage from wildlife such as kudu, and protecting them during the initial planting phase.
