In Ecuador’s Intag Valley, 19 families from four communities are developing a 300-kilowatt run-of-river hydropower plant. This project captures the Aguagrún River’s natural flows without a large dam, making it less environmentally impactful.
The families own 90% of the HidroAguagrún project, registered as a business in 2022. Half of the revenue from selling electricity to the national grid will support conservation activities, such as cloud forest protection. The initiative arose from concerns about water availability and climate change impacts in the region.
