Electric two-wheelers are driving Tamil Nadu’s e-mobility expansion, with official data indicating they comprised over 83% of the 174,477 vehicles registered in 2025. More than 116,461 electric two-wheelers were sold by June 2026, underscoring their dominance in the state’s market.
Total vehicle registrations in Tamil Nadu saw a strong year-on-year increase, projected to rise from 90,305 in 2023 to 174,477 in 2025. Urban and industrial districts including Chennai, Coimbatore, and Salem are expected to be significant contributors to this growth. While electric cars and three-wheelers are also seeing increased registrations, they still lag considerably behind two-wheelers.
Tamil Nadu is emerging as a major investment hub for the automobile and electric vehicle sectors, attracting significant investment and implementing policies to support EV component manufacturing and charging infrastructure. However, a shortage of public charging stations remains a concern, with the state having one public charger for every 316 registered EVs. The state government aims to install 20,000 public charging stations by 2031.
