Smallholder farmers in Indonesia are encountering a growing wave of unpredictability, with environmental breakdown, climate change, and economic instability identified as major threats to their resilience. This convergence of factors was discussed by researchers and local entrepreneurs at a recent convention.
The 2026 Asia Grassroots Forum, held in Jakarta on June 3 and 4, provided a platform for these discussions. Alex Arnall, an associate professor, was among the experts who spoke at the event, emphasizing the complex challenges faced by these farming communities. The forum highlighted how interconnected environmental and economic pressures are impacting agricultural livelihoods across the nation.
