Meat and Dairy Firms’ Climate Claims Largely Greenwashing, Study Reveals

Meat and dairy production are identified as major contributors to deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions. A new study reveals that the vast majority of environmental claims made by companies in this sector can be classified as greenwashing.

The research analyzed over 1,200 environmental commitments from 33 of the largest companies in the meat and dairy industry between 2021 and 2024. The findings suggest that nearly all of these claims, specifically 98%, could be considered misleading.

This indicates a significant gap between the stated environmental efforts of these companies and their actual impact or the substance of their promises. The study highlights concerns about transparency and the effectiveness of corporate sustainability initiatives within the sector.
