Nigeria’s shifting rainfall damages waterleaf crop

Farmers in Calabar, Nigeria are facing difficulties cultivating waterleaf, a popular edible green, due to shifts in rainfall. Enono Koka reported that most of her waterleaf crops perished following days of heavy rain between August and September.

Joy David Okon also experienced a similar fate, with her vegetable garden turning into a marshland thick with weeds upon her return from a trip. The planted waterleaf stems looked scanty due to excessive rain this year. These events illustrate the growing challenges to Nigeria’s waterleaf growing cycle caused by altered rainfall patterns, with persistent downpours in coastal cities like Calabar contributing to the issues.
