Artificial nests aid Hong Kong’s endangered yellow-crested cockatoos facing housing crisis

Artificial nest boxes are providing shelter for the yellow-crested cockatoo (Cacatua sulphurea), a critically endangered species found in Hong Kong. The city’s population of about 200 cockatoos, descendants of escaped pets, faces a shortage of natural nesting sites due to storm damage and tree pruning.

Biologist Astrid Andersson and conservationist Harry Wong launched HK Cockatoo Watch to address this “housing crisis.” They have installed 15 artificial nest boxes, adapted for Hong Kong’s climate and equipped with cameras to monitor breeding behavior remotely. The project aims to find ways for humans and these birds to coexist in the urban environment.
