Mushrooms, the reproductive organs of fungi, play a vital role in ecosystems and serve as a food source for humans and animals. They also hold potential solutions for food security and the plastic crisis.
Companies like Evocative are using fungi, such as the artist’s conk mushroom, to create materials that could replace leather, plastic, and packaging. Gabriela D’Elia, director of the Fungal Diversity Survey, noted that mushrooms can inspire eco-friendly solutions and provide farmers with additional income.
However, some species, like golden oyster mushrooms native to Asia, are spreading in North America and displacing native fungal species, according to a study by the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
