Photographer Documents Sri Lanka’s Complex Human-Elephant Conflict

Federico Borella, an award-winning Italian photographer, has dedicated four years to documenting Sri Lanka’s human-elephant conflict. His work aims to capture the complexity of this relationship, noting instances of “veneration toward elephants” even among those affected by attacks.

Borella’s photographic project on the human-elephant conflict in Sri Lanka received the Picture of the Year International (POYi) award in the environmental category in 2024. His other notable works include documenting the link between climate change and farmer suicides in South India and exploring the Italian exotic animal trade.
