Giant Anteater Returns to Argentina Reserve After Decades-Long Absence

A giant anteater returned to Argentina’s Alma GuaranĂ reserve in 2025, marking the first sighting of the vulnerable species in Corrientes province since 1986. Researchers suggest this spontaneous reappearance may be linked to restoration work initiated in the reserve in 2021.

The anteater is believed to have found adequate food and resources to establish itself in the area. It is speculated that the individual may have traveled from neighboring Chaco province, potentially crossing the ParanĂ¡ River during a historical low water level event in 2024.

Giant anteaters are classified as vulnerable due to habitat loss driven by agriculture and livestock, as well as infrastructure development and hunting.
