Kathmandu Resolution urges Asia-wide conservation leadership amid crises

The 6th Conservation Asia Congress, held in Kathmandu, Nepal, in early June, brought together nearly 500 conservationists, predominantly from Asian countries. The event, organized by the Society for Conservation Biology’s Asia region and local partners, focused on “Harmonizing Biodiversity and Human Well-being in Asia.”

The congress addressed the ongoing biodiversity, climate, and cultural crises in Asia, attributing challenges to factors including infrastructure growth, natural resource dependence, high population density, illegal wildlife trade, and political conflict. Conservationists emphasized the need for faster action and greater leadership from within Asia, noting the historical dominance of Western knowledge systems in conservation discourse.
