Scientists and investors are working to restore a 23-square-mile peatland in North Carolina. The effort aims to reduce climate-warming emissions and restore native habitat.
Ditches have drained the peatland, making it vulnerable to drought and wildfire, and releasing large volumes of carbon dioxide. Saturated peatlands store one-third of global carbon. Pantheon Regeneration plans to restore the water table to reduce emissions and intends to sell carbon credits to fund the preservation of one million acres of peatland from Virginia to Florida.
