Traffic pollution cost Gurugram children nearly 95,000 school days: Study

Traffic emissions in Gurugram caused nearly 95,000 school days to be missed by children and teenagers in 2025 due to asthma, according to a study by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT).

Private cars were identified as the primary source of traffic emissions in Gurugram, which has one of the highest car ownership rates in India. The study noted that over 80 percent of emissions came from newer BS IV and BS VI vehicles. Officials discussed the need for coordinated solutions to address air pollution in the Delhi NCR region, highlighting incentives for electric vehicles.

The research indicated that transitioning all Gurugram-registered vehicles to electric would yield substantial health gains, with the remaining benefits depending on addressing emissions from vehicles entering the city from neighboring areas. The findings emerge as vehicle registrations in Gurugram reach a seven-year high, with electric vehicles comprising only 4.3 percent of new sales.
