Electricity Carbon Emissions Calculator
Calculate electricity-related carbon emissions using recent country electricity carbon intensity or a custom emission factor.
2025 data · Ember (2026) / Our World in Data
Country selection fills the 2025 value automatically. The factor remains editable.
Optional simplified adjustment where appropriate for the selected accounting approach.

Method:
Electricity emissions are calculated as:
COâ‚‚e =
Electricity Consumption × Carbon Intensity
Country values are 2025 lifecycle carbon intensities of electricity generation from Ember (2026), as processed and published by Our World in Data.
Values include lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions associated with electricity generation and are expressed in g COâ‚‚e/kWh.
When a renewable electricity share is entered:
Grid Electricity =
Total Electricity ×
(1 − Renewable Share)
Adjusted Emissions =
Grid Electricity × Carbon Intensity
The renewable adjustment is intentionally simple. Formal Scope 2 accounting may require location-based factors, market-based factors, supplier-specific information, residual mixes or contractual instrument rules.
Therefore, the Custom option should be used where a specific regulatory, corporate or GHG Protocol reporting factor is required.
