Boiler Fuel Consumption Calculator

Calculate boiler fuel consumption from steam production, steam enthalpy, feedwater temperature, boiler efficiency and fuel heating value.

Use the steam enthalpy corresponding to the actual steam pressure and condition.
A fuel unit may be kg, litre, Nm³ or another unit, provided the heating value uses the same basis.
Optional. Enter operating hours to estimate annual fuel consumption.
Fuel Consumption Rate
Estimated fuel required at the entered steam production and boiler efficiency.
Fuel consumption rate
Fuel per tonne of steam
Useful heat to steam
Fuel energy input
Heat required per tonne of steam
Feedwater enthalpy
Annual fuel consumption
Method: Feedwater enthalpy is approximated as: hfw ≈ 4.186 × T in kJ/kg, referenced approximately to liquid water at 0°C. Useful heat required to generate steam is: Qsteam = ṁsteam × (hsteam − hfw) Boiler fuel-energy input is: Qfuel = Qsteam ÷ Boiler Efficiency Fuel consumption is: Fuel Consumption = Fuel Energy Input ÷ Fuel Heating Value Fuel required per tonne of steam is calculated using the same heat balance on a 1,000 kg steam basis. Heating value and boiler efficiency should use a consistent HHV or LHV basis. This calculator assumes steady operation and uses a simplified feedwater enthalpy approximation. For high-accuracy steam-system analysis, use steam-table enthalpy for both the steam and feedwater states.
