Sri Lanka Bans Single-Use Plastic Bottles at Government Events

Sri Lanka has enacted a ban on the purchase and use of single-use plastic water bottles within all government institutions. This directive, effective May 31, was issued through a new government circular.

The primary objective of this policy is to significantly reduce wasteful plastic consumption across the state sector. This initiative marks the latest effort by the island nation to address and mitigate plastic pollution.

The government’s move signifies a commitment to tackling plastic waste more broadly. Further details regarding the scope and implementation of charges for plastic bags were also indicated as part of the ongoing efforts to manage plastic usage.
