Residents in South Africa’s coal mining areas are experiencing significant public health consequences stemming from unfulfilled promises to improve air quality. The community of Masakhane, located in eMalahleni, lives in close proximity to Duvha Power Station, a substantial coal-fired power facility operated by Eskom, the national energy company.
Elisabeth Moutloang, a 49-year-old resident, resides in the shadow of the power station. Between her community and the station lies a coal mine, an industry where she previously worked two decades ago. The persistent presence of these industrial operations contributes to the ongoing air quality challenges faced by the local population.
