Seven of the nine planetary boundaries essential for Earth’s health have been transgressed beyond safe operating limits, with all affected boundaries showing worsening trends. This finding comes from the Planetary Health Check 2026 report by the Planetary Boundaries Science Lab at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK).
The transgressed boundaries include climate change, biosphere integrity, biogeochemical flows, novel entities, land system change, freshwater change, and ocean acidification. Climate change, biosphere integrity, biogeochemical flows, and novel entities are in the high-risk zone, while the other three have moved into the increasing risk zone.
The boundaries for atmospheric aerosol loading and stratospheric ozone depletion remain within safe operating space, although atmospheric aerosols have shown regional transgressions. The report highlights that human activities, particularly since the mid-20th century, have driven these transgressions, potentially leading to irreversible damage to the planet’s life support systems.
