Protests by students in at least 10 Indian states and 25 districts have highlighted significant gaps in basic school facilities, including teacher shortages, poor classrooms, inadequate drinking water, and unsafe access. These demonstrations occurred between July and August 2026.
The Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+) 2025-26 report by the Union Ministry of Education noted improvements in access and infrastructure but also revealed disparities. For instance, the national average for schools with electricity is 93.5%, while states like Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh fall below this. Similarly, access to functional toilets shows regional differences, with southern states generally performing better.
Students’ demands range from more teachers and better food to safe buildings, water, and electricity, aligning with rights guaranteed under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and India’s Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009. The protests follow similar youth activism, suggesting a growing awareness and demand for improved educational environments.
