Lawmakers from across the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region have urged for stronger regional cooperation to address climate risks following a devastating flood in Nepal’s Rasuwa border district. The call was made during the 2nd HKH Parliamentarians’ Meet in Thimphu, Bhutan.
Participants emphasized the need for collective action, climate-smart laws, investments, and cross-border preparedness to protect vulnerable mountain communities and downstream populations across the eight-country region. The meeting aimed to strengthen political commitment and regional collaboration on climate action and resilience. Representatives from Bangladesh and Pakistan shared experiences highlighting the importance of integrating climate adaptation into national development plans and the necessity of regional cooperation.
The HKH region spans Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Pakistan, impacting the food, water, and energy security of up to two billion people.
